We finally lived to see the day when Microsoft and Apple are making their products open source. Earlier Microsoft had announced the open sourcing of .NET programming language. Following the suit, Apple announced at WWDC15 that the new version of Apple’s flagship programming language Swift will be open source.
“We think Swift is the next big programming language. The one we will all be doing applications and systems programming on for 20 years to come. And we think Swift should be everywhere and used by everyone. And so we are going to be doing something really big. Today we’re announcing that Swift will be open source.”
In its blog post, Apple mentions that the move will take place later this year. Swift 2.0 compiler and standard libraries will available for Linux along with iOS and OS X. Windows did not get a mention here so I presume that it won’t be joining the party at least for now.
The announcement came as surprise to many in tech world. But as a Linux lover, it’s more of a pleasant surprise to me. After Microsoft announcing Visual Studio Code for Linux, this is another good news for Open Source world.
